About Me

Hello, I’m Marcel Kalfs (44), a fullstack web-developer and graphic designer based in the southern part of the Netherlands. I have a rich (20+ years) experience in web site and database development, graphic design and DTP for national and international clients and projects.

As a person I do not like bragging or showing off, I was not raised that way and it's simply not my style. Just for you to know to add a little perspective. I am a self-confident, but pretty modest guy who simply tries to be friendly, honest and generous. I feel really fortunate to have worked for great clients with great projects and all the friendly people I worked with.

I consider it a lucky gift that employers and clients have been as kind and basically supported me in a way that allows me to have great fun working, travel abroad, and make a nice and worry-free living in the meantime. It's not something I take for granted or can take the credits for. The best I can do is return the favour by being extremely fanatic and trying to prove I am worth the trust once the opportunity is there.

So in short, I just want to show a lot of grattitude to (former) employers and clients, really, a very big thanks, you are the best! It's been a great experience.

Given the fact a lot of niceness happened, I am sharing some, on the one hand to show what I can possibly do and offer in the future and on the other hand to simply share the fun. I would like to invite you to just scroll down and have a look.

Essentially my dream is to work 50% parttime (current job) and 50% as a freelancer and my offer is to work fanatically and to the best of my abilities.

What I do best

Web Applications

In the vast majority of projects I act as a full-stack developer and create dynamic websites from scratch to the specifications of the client.
Webprojects are diverse, but included multiple projects of a major oil company, a food ordering platform, a subscription community with invoicing, a music venue with ticketing, a card program, event promotion and registrations, etc.

Graphic Design

With an essential set of skills and the right tools, such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign a lot can be created in print (and online). My experience includes publishing books, magazines, poster, flyers, personalized prints (invitations / badges / direct mailings), instore displays, magazine and newspaper ads, logo designs, technical drawings, digital flipbooks, etc.

Present / Audio & video

Digital usually refers to websites, but is a bit broader and includes event presentations, narrowcasting and digital outdoor advertising as well. I do have experience with those, e.g. creating powerpoint presenations for corporate events, facing employees and key clients. I can offer presentations and also help create video animations and do some audio editing.

Art Fair

Development & Design

The Annual Dutch Art Fair is an exhibition and tradefair in Amsterdam that takes place in October each year.

My contributions to the project are a website that promotes the fair and handles participant registrations and the design of tradefair materials, like banners, floorplan, etc.

The website is a showcase of a custom ASP.NET C# bi-lingual webapplication with a high degree of detail, which e.g. features registration, differential pricing, ordering, balloting, PDF invoicing, online payments (iDEAL, creditcard, Paypal, multiple partial terms), Excel exports, user accounts with uploads and an adminstrative back-end to manage those processes and provide insight into status and key metrics.

DATA & DESIGN

The Artists Yearbook is an annual book of approximately 300 pages where artists present their artworks, with interviews of e.g. the artist of the year and contributions from Dutch celebrities like designer Jan des Bouvrie and tv-host Jack Spijkerman.

My contributions to the project are the design and layout of the book itself, the accompanying website and the related website for the artist of the year election, of which the results are included.

Technically speaking the book is a showcase of DTP and how to combine a dataset (MySQL/Excel) and creative design (Adobe InDesign). The same technique can be applied for creating voluminous lay-outs (e.g. product catalogs) and press-quality DTP personalization (e.g. certificates, personal invitations, and badges).

Presentations / Audio & Video

A very simple 30s .mp4 video introduce and show the key benefits of a membership platform.

My contribution is editing the animation and adding a sound file to it, converting it to a streaming .mp4 and publishing it online.

The video is a basic showcase to illustrate video and audio editing. Most of the video editing I have done was for use in presentations, e.g. by combining multiple videos and audio / music files in Adobe Premiere to a single video, adding animated intro titles and lower thirds, subtitles to support a multi-lingual audience, animating infographics, fixing volume issues and adding a nice logo sting (After Effects).

Technical Skills

Below are technologies and languages I use frequently. Since the capabilities are broader than the applications I have used them for, no skill is 100%. Practically speaking however if the job requires features I haven't built before, I'm pretty confident I'll be able to figure it out. From a practical perspective I can build almost any web application from scratch.

Design Skills

DTP and graphic design have little secrets, it's what I have been doing for years. As part of webdesigns, desktop publishing and digital presentations. Every now and then I also do some video editing, so I can animate a logo or edit an After Effects template to create a nice video presentation or webpromo, but I am not a video specialist.

Basically I work every day on a variety of projects and I do not update my portfolio that frequently. The benefit of 20+ years experience

As one of the benefits of experience I maintain an ever growing code library for repetitive or common tasks. E.g. generating POCO/OOP Classes and Methods based on database schemas and tables using reflection, scraping all e-mail adresses or product data from URLs, copying via FTP, Regex input validations, user authentication, invoicing, exception handling, API integrations, string manipulations, file/image uploading and manipulations such as format conversions and resizing, creating cronjobs / scheduled tasks, migrating and converting between data-formats such as SQL Server/MySQL/XML/JSON/Excel/CSV. Just to name of few examples.

Some projects and scripts took a lot of time and resources, debugging and incremental steps and fine-tuning to build. Expensive stuff if you consider the time spent and some scripts are really quite elegant for being generic and optimized, object oriented and scalable. Perhaps to time-consuming to even consider building from scratch for an individual project, but quite a nice powerful cart of tools to have ready to work with.

In terms of working together and contracts I am pretty flexible. My current part-time (0.55 fte) job actually started as a freelance assignment and after completing the webapplication I was simply offered a permanent contract. I was happy to accept the offer, 14 years ago and have been happy since. If you look at my work experience, you can also see my other job lasted 20 years. So I am pretty loyal and basically clients and employers have always been statisfied with the work I do. I have references to support that if you would like them.

My ambition is to work 50% as an employee (current job) and 50% as a freelancer and besides work on side-projects and invest part of the proceeds in a sustainability non-profit.
